Title: The power function and large cardinals
Time: Oct. 25, 4:00-5:00pm
Location: New Main Building room 1124
Speaker: Dr Vincenzo Dimonte (Technische Universitat in Vienna & Kurt Godel Research Center in Vienna)
Abstract: The seminar is a quick overview of the history of the relationship between the power function and large cardinals, starting from the first fundamental hypotheses described at the end of the 19th century, passing through the Singular Cardinal Problem and ending into the most recent results that involve extremely large cardinals. In synthesis, the possible behaviours of the power function on the regular cardinals are well known and characterized, and hold under all the most popular large cardinals. On the other hand, its behaviour on the singular cardinals is deeply connected to large cardinals and yet not completely understood. However, the strong rank-into-rank hypothesis I1 permits a lot of flexibility. The last part is a joint work with Prof. Sy Friedman.
