Shengyang Zhong Receives the 2026 Birkhoff–von Neumann Prize

Shengyang Zhong, Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and a member of the Center for Logic, Language, and Cognition at Peking University, has been awarded the 2026 Birkhoff–von Neumann Prize.

Presented biennially by the International Quantum Structures Association (IQSA), the prize recognizes outstanding scientific achievements in quantum structures and research with a significant impact on quantum logic and quantum foundations. The award ceremony took place during the 17th Biennial Meeting of IQSA in Saint John’s, Canada.

The prize committee commended Professor Zhong for his outstanding and original contributions to quantum logic and the mathematical foundations of quantum theory. 

The official annoucnement for the award says:

"Shengyang Zhong has made outstanding and original contributions in recent years to the field of quantum logic and the mathematical foundations of quantum theory. In particular, his work on the logical and algebraic structures underlying quantum theory is distinguished by its exceptional combination of mathematical rigor and conceptual clarity.

A central achievement of Shengyang Zhong is the introduction of quantum Kripke frames, a relational framework that provides a conceptually transparent and mathematically robust model of quantum systems. By establishing a one-to-one correspondence between these structures and Piron lattices, he has built a bridge between relational semantics and the traditional lattice-theoretic approach to quantum logic, while maintaining a clear connection with Hilbert space structures.  His work goes significantly beyond representation results. He has developed a duality theory between categories of quantum Kripke frames and orthomodular structures, offering a refined formulation of the state-property duality at the heart of quantum theory. Moreover, he has introduced morphisms and compositional constructions that capture fundamental operations such as the tensor product, thereby opening a new perspective on entanglement and compositionality.

More recently, Shengyang Zhong has proposed a unifying framework for preparation and test in physics, providing a simple yet powerful relational semantics that clarifies core notions of quantum logic, including orthogonality and closure structures, while remaining independent of Hilbert space formalism.

Through a sustained and coherent research program, reflected in a series of publications in leading international journals, Shengyang Zhong has significantly advanced our understanding of quantum logic from a relational and conceptual standpoint.

In summary, his work exemplifies the spirit of the Birkhoff-von Neumann tradition: it deepens the mathematical structure of quantum theory while illuminating its conceptual foundations."


The PKU Logic Center warmly congratulates Professor Zhong on this achievement.
